BE A REFEREE

Referees are a vital part of playing roller derby and training for games. Without them the players couldn't improve and games wouldn't happen. Referees are skating officials which means that they get to wear roller skates (though as a referee you have to right to wear inline skates if you want!) and skate around close to the action. Being a referee means being a part of the Halifax Bruising Banditas team as well as getting the opportunity to branch out, improve your skills and officiate at some of the highest levels of roller derby competition. Plus you get to pick your own derby name and number if you want to!
How do I join?
The best way to contact us is either through our Facebook page or email us at enquiries@bruisingbanditas.com. There is also a contact form at the bottom of this page that you can fill in to get in touch.

If you already know how to skate to a reasonable standard (you can skate forwards easily, you can stop well and you can skate backwards comfortably) then you can start to learn how to referee straight away. Get in touch and we'll invite you along to your first training session!

If you're not a confident skater or have never skated before in your life we still want to hear from you. You can join the New Skater Intake Programme which is also open to budding referees and will teach you all you need to know about staying on eight wheels while your busy officiating. Please drop us a message either on our Facebook page, our email address or by using the contact form below.

What do I need to bring?
For your first session all you need to bring is yourself, some suitable clothes and a bottle of water. If you have your own whistle that's great! If you are joining the New Skater Intake Programme you'll receive a starter pack that will give you some information you'll find useful as you start your roller derby journey. We run the New Skater Intake as 3 stages made up of 6 weekly sessions. Each stage costs £25 and we have skates and protective equipment you can borrow from us until you get your own.
Do I need any experience?
Nope! Some of our skaters could barely stand up when they first started, now they are capable of keeping up with even the nippiest of jammers! You will be taught everything from how to skate properly to how to fall properly. As long as you're over 18, all you need is a bit of determination and the willingness to learn!
We are more than happy to train referees of any and all genders.
The Banditas are a UKRDA affiliated team so we abide by the UKRDA Transgender Policy, (which includes a section on intersex, genderqueer, genderfluid, genderneutral or bigendered skaters) please feel free to read it and email us if you have any concerns.
